Police Urge Zimbabweans to Surrender Illegal FirearmsThe Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged people and institutions holding illegal firearms to surrender them during the presidential firearm amnesty running from 12 October to 12 November 2026.
In a press statement issued on 19 October, the police said the amnesty allows people to voluntarily surrender unlicensed, smuggled or illegally acquired firearms and ammunition at their nearest police station without being questioned or prosecuted.
The police also urged licensed firearm owners to update their records and renew their certificates in line with the Firearms Act [Chapter 10:09].
According to the statement, some firearm owners have failed to renew their licences or properly secure their weapons, contributing to crimes such as armed robbery and murder.
The police warned that after the amnesty ends, they will conduct physical checks and verification exercises targeting people suspected of keeping illegal firearms.
Those seeking guidance on the safe surrender of firearms can visit their nearest police station or contact the National Complaints Desk on:
