The Government has stepped up efforts to rehabilitate the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road, with eight contractors resuming work and setting a December 2026 target for the next phase of improvements on the key route linking Zimbabwe’s tourism hub to the rest of the country.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, confirmed the development in a post on his X account, saying rehabilitation work was now underway along the road.
Mangwana said each of the eight contractors was targeting to rehabilitate at least 20 kilometres of the road by December 2026.
“Rehabilitation is underway right now on the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road, with all eight contractors back on site, each targeting at least 20 km by December 2026,” he said.
He explained that the work was being carried out in phases and included bush clearing, the construction of detours, earthworks, drainage improvements, surfacing and road widening.
According to Mangwana, 73.4 kilometres of the road had been rehabilitated so far, while the Ministry was stepping up monitoring to ensure that work was completed according to the required standards.
He acknowledged that the project would take time but said the Government remained committed to its completion.
“This won’t be completed overnight, but Government is committed to the project and prioritizing it, with the Ministry intensifying monitoring of scope, progress and quality,” Mangwana said.
The road is used by tourists, businesses and other travellers, making its rehabilitation important for improving road safety, reducing travel time and supporting tourism and economic activity.
Mangwana said the project was expected to improve connectivity between the three destinations, noting that the journey currently takes about 15 hours.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution when driving through construction zones as rehabilitation work continues.
