A court in Johannesburg has ordered the immediate deportation of Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of the late Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. This follows his conviction for crimes involving a firearm and breaking immigration laws.
Mugabe appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Wednesday. During the sentencing, the judge handed down several strict penalties to resolve the case. Mugabe was ordered to pay a fine of R600000, with the specific condition that he would have to serve a prison sentence if the amount was not paid. Furthermore, the court issued an order for his immediate deportation, requiring him to leave South Africa as soon as the legal proceedings concluded.
Following the hearing, Mugabe was taken directly from the court to OR Tambo International Airport, where he was sent back to Zimbabwe.
Mugabe was not alone in the case. His co-accused, Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze, received a harsher sentence. Matonhodze was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of attempted murder, illegal possession of a gun and ammunition.
