Navigating the ZESA Domestic Energy Survey: Why Compliance Matters and How to Stay Vigilant

Story by  Hwange Chronicles Editor (s) 53 views

HARARE / HWANGE — The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA Holdings) has officially launched its nationwide Domestic Energy Survey & Load Profiling Study, running through October and November 2026.

As ZESA Research Enumerators begin visiting selected domestic premises across the country, the exercise presents both a crucial opportunity to improve national power distribution and a moment for property owners to remain security-conscious.

For years, energy distribution planning has struggled to keep pace with rapid urban development, changing household power consumption habits, and the widespread adoption of private rooftop solar systems.

The nationwide survey aims to bridge this data gap by gathering specific information on:

Appliance Timings & Usage: Understanding peak energy demands across various times of the day.

Solar Systems & Alternative Energy Mixes: Accounting for off-grid and hybrid solar installations to balance local supply.

Future Grid Planning: Optimizing power distribution, reducing localized load shedding, and building a more resilient power grid for Zimbabwe.

Providing accurate information to legitimate survey teams directly contributes to better energy forecasting and more reliable service delivery in our communities. Furthermore, ZESA has reassured the public that all data collected is strictly confidential and reserved exclusively for research and planning purposes.

While public cooperation is vital, security and personal safety must remain a priority. Door-to-door surveys can occasionally create opportunities for impostors or bogus operators attempting to gain unauthorized access to homes.

Residents are strongly advised to exercise thorough scrutiny before allowing any field officer onto their property:

1. Demand Dual Identification

Legitimate ZESA Research Enumerators are required to produce two forms of identification:

An official ZESA Identity Card and National Identity Card.

Rule of thumb: Never admit anyone into your yard or home who produces only one ID or refuses to display official credentials clearly.

2. Verify Credentials Before Granting Access

If you have any doubt regarding the identity of an enumerator at your gate, do not open your property. Keep the gates secured and immediately verify their credentials through ZESA’s official verification channels:

 Toll-Free Shortcode: 704

 Direct Lines: 08688003485 or 08688003486

 Landline: 0242 704040

3. Know the Scope of the Survey

Understand what enumerators are authorized to do. The survey focuses on data collection regarding energy usage and appliances. Enumerators:

Are NOT authorized to collect cash payments, demand fines, or charge fees for any reason.

Are NOT authorized to perform electrical repairs, inspect internal household wiring for penalties, or tamper with your meter box.

Participating in the Domestic Energy Survey is a practical step toward securing a more stable energy future for our neighborhoods. However, compliance should never come at the expense of safety. By verifying identities and holding field staff to official standards, citizens can support national grid planning while protecting their homes and families.
