MSD Warns of Thunderstorms and Hailstorms Across Zimbabwe

Story by  Hwange Chronicles Editor (s) 69 views

Zimbabwe is expected to experience scattered thunderstorms and possible hailstorms this week, with the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) warning of potential damage to crops, infrastructure and property.

In an advisory issued on Monday, 26 October 2026, the MSD said the thunderstorms were expected in the southern and western parts of the country on Tuesday, 27 October, before spreading to the northern and eastern provinces on Wednesday and Thursday.

The affected areas on Tuesday include Matabeleland North and South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo and southern parts of Manicaland.

The department said cool, moist south-easterly winds would bring more stable conditions to the southern half of the country on Wednesday. However, thunderstorms were expected to move northwards, affecting Harare Metropolitan, northern parts of Manicaland and all Mashonaland provinces through Thursday, 29 October.

The MSD warned that the weather conditions could result in lightning strikes, strong winds and flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas, rivers and urban centres. Strong winds could also damage crops, trees, roofs and other structures.

Farmers have also been cautioned about the possible impact of rainfall on grain quality, as wet conditions during grain filling and maturity could increase the risk of fungal diseases. To minimise the risks, the department urged the public to seek shelter indoors when thunderstorms occur and avoid standing under trees or near tall poles and other exposed objects during lightning.

Residents were also advised to secure loose items, check rooftops and trim loose-hanging branches to reduce damage caused by strong winds.

The MSD further urged the public to avoid sailing during storms and postpone trips where possible. Livestock owners were encouraged to provide adequate shelter, bedding and feed to keep their animals safe.
