Former Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe Malaika Mushandu has gone to the High Court of Zimbabwe to overturn the decision that stripped her of her title just weeks after she was crowned in Harare.
Mushandu was crowned on June 6, 2026, but her reign was cut short when the Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe organization announced her dethronement, citing alleged misconduct and ineligibility.
On August 26, 2026, she filed an application at the High Court in Harare asking the court to set aside the decision.In her court application, Mushandu argues that the process leading to her removal was procedurally flawed and violated the principles of natural justice.
She claims that days after her coronation, she was invited to what she believed was an ordinary meeting, only to find out it was actually a disciplinary hearing.
According to Mushandu, the allegations against her involved claims that she left the stage prematurely following her crowning and later became unavailable.
She emphasized that her title was a continuation of a long-standing career built over several years through pageantry, modeling, and public representation, having previously been crowned the youngest Miss Zimbabwe in 2011.
In an official public statement released on August 22, 2026, the Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe Organization formally clarified the status of the title. Signed by CEO J. Taderera, the organization stated that the public release was issued to place the correct facts on record.
They confirmed unequivocally that Malaika Mushandu was dethroned as Miss Cosmo Zimbabwe 2026 with effect from June 23, 2026. The decision was reached following due consideration of matters relating to misconduct and ineligibility, including her failure to satisfy the applicable standards, requirements, and obligations set by both the local and international organizations.
The organization maintained that the decision was neither arbitrary nor taken lightly, as the title carries significant responsibilities to safeguard the integrity and reputation of the pageant.
Consequently, from June 23, 2026 onward, Mushandu ceased to be the recognized titleholder and lost all authority, mandate, or privileges to represent the organization.
The statement noted that any representation suggesting she still holds the title is incorrect and expressly disavowed, while clarifying that the statement was issued solely to set the record straight rather than to humiliate or embarrass her.
The controversy has sparked debate on social media, where supporters called for further details regarding her dethronement.
Shortly before the official public announcement, Mushandu posted a photograph on social media captioned, “Heavy is the head that wears the crown,” driving further speculation.
The organization has given its reasons, and Mushandu is now challenging the decision through the courts. The case is now before the High Court. The allegations and claims made by either side have not yet been determined by the court.
The High Court will ultimately decide whether the decision to revoke Mushandu’s title should stand or be set aside.
