In a historic milestone for Matabeleland North, Hwange Colliery Stadium hosted the provincial Independence Day celebrations for the very first time on April 18th. While the national festivities were centered in Maphisa, the atmosphere in Hwange was vibrant as thousands gathered to mark Zimbabwe’s 46th year of freedom.
The choice of venue was deeply symbolic, situated near two undocumented battle sites where liberation fighters famously brought down a Rhodesian army plane and killed over 30 enemy soldiers.
These celebrations served a dual purpose: honoring the birth of the nation and educating the younger generation on this local, yet pivotal, war history.
In attendance were prominent war veterans, including Cde Davison ‘Cde Skuza’ Ndlovu, Cde Christopher Ndlovu (Soweto Fuyana), and Cde Dominic Lubasi, whose presence underscored the district’s significant contribution to the liberation struggle.

Presiding over the ceremony under the theme “Unity and Development Towards Vision 2030,” the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland North, Honourable Richard Moyo, delivered the Presidential Speech. He emphasized the collective drive toward an upper-middle-income society and recognized the role of historic battles in securing the freedoms enjoyed today.

Hundreds of locals from across the district joined government officials to witness military displays and traditional performances. The massive turnout and the focus on regional history proved that the heart of independence beats strongly in Hwange, bridging the gap between the sacrifices of the past and the development goals of the future.
