In a significant development, two employees of the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) at the Hwange facility, Tawanda Mhaka and Ruth Chiyani, are facing theft charges amounting to US$3.8 million. The charges stem from an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of company property valued at this staggering amount.
The investigation revealed that on the 22nd and 23rd of August 2025, a truck was captured on CCTV at the Turbine Hall loading stolen goods, which included 15 electric motors, 48 tonnes of brass pipes, and a metal container. The footage showed these items being loaded without proper documentation, raising serious concerns about internal security and accountability.
Ruth Chiyani, who is reportedly a Loss Control Officer, is accused of facilitating the theft by failing to uphold the necessary safeguards designed to protect the company’s assets. This breach of trust not only jeopardizes the integrity of ZPC but also undermines efforts to combat corruption within the organization.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working diligently to ensure that all involved parties are held accountable. This case underscores the importance of transparency and adherence to proper protocols within state-owned enterprises, particularly in sectors critical to the nation’s infrastructure and energy supply.
As the situation develops, stakeholders are urged to remain vigilant and support efforts aimed at eradicating corruption in all its forms. The ZPC and relevant authorities are committed to ensuring that justice is served and that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
This incident serves as a reminder of the need for stringent measures to protect public resources and maintain the trust of the communities served by state enterprises. Together, we can work towards a corruption-free environment that promotes accountability and integrity in all sectors.
