A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when a three-year-old girl from Matetsi, situated in Hwange District of Matabeleland North Province, was tragically killed by a crocodile while playing near the Matetsi River Bridge along the Byo-Victoria Falls Highway.
Reports from ZBC indicate that the young girl was accompanied by her five-year-old brother while their mother, Tariro Tsondzowore, was engaged in fishing nearby. Authorities revealed that the mother had briefly stepped away, leaving the children close to the riverbank. In a sudden turn of events, a crocodile emerged from the water, attacked, and pulled the child into the river.
Despite efforts by bystanders to scare the reptile away, they were unsuccessful.
The little girl hailed from Masikili Village under Chief Shana in Hwange District, and she was taken before help could reach the scene.
Responding swiftly, rangers from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) arrived and managed to shoot one crocodile. Authorities have confirmed that partial human remains have been recovered, with ongoing efforts to locate additional remains.
Further details of the incident have circulated widely on social media, where images depict a somber gathering along the riverbank. Community members can be seen watching as uniformed personnel conduct operations in the water. A ZimParks vehicle is parked nearby, and small groups of onlookers stand on the grassy embankment, reflecting the severity of the situation.
This tragedy has reignited discussions about the escalating issue of human-wildlife conflict in Zimbabwe, especially in communities living near rivers and wildlife habitats.
Local officials are urging residents, particularly those residing along riverbanks, to remain vigilant and exercise caution in light of the potential dangers posed by crocodiles and other wildlife.
