Southern African leaders are meeting in Durban, South Africa, today, Monday 17 August, for the 46th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government.
The summit is taking place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre and is being hosted and chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
SADC has 16 member states and was established in 1980 to promote economic growth and social development through regional cooperation, good governance, peace and security.
The summit is being held under the theme, “Resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World”.
The theme highlights the need for SADC countries to invest in infrastructure, agriculture and critical minerals as the region works to strengthen industrialisation.
One of the key issues expected to take centre stage is how countries can improve infrastructure to support industries, create opportunities and boost economic activity across the region.
Leaders are also expected to look at ways of strengthening agriculture and making better use of the region’s critical mineral resources while ensuring that development benefits communities.
The discussions are aimed at building a stronger, more competitive and climate-resilient SADC region while promoting inclusive development and a better future for its people.
