Police Call on All Road Users to Exercise Caution During the Public Holiday
The message below is by ZRP Officer Commanding Police Matabeleland North province, Commissioner Steven Kazingizi.
As the nation observes the public holiday, the Police urge all motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other road users to exercise maximum caution and responsibility on the roads.
The increased movement of people and vehicles during public holidays often results in heavier traffic and a higher risk of road traffic accidents. We therefore call upon all road users to make safety their priority.
Motorists are urged to:
- Observe speed limits and reduce speed where road, weather or traffic conditions require.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Avoid reckless and negligent driving, including dangerous overtaking and driving without due care and attention.
- Ensure that all passengers wear seat belts and that children are properly secured.
- Avoid using mobile phones while driving.
- Ensure that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on a journey.
- Take regular breaks when travelling long distances and avoid driving when fatigued.
- Exercise patience and courtesy towards other road users.
- Comply with traffic signs, signals and instructions from Police officers.
Pedestrians are also reminded to use designated crossing points where available, exercise extreme caution when crossing roads and avoid walking on the carriageway unnecessarily.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to take particular care of children and ensure that they are properly supervised around roads and vehicles.
Let us all remember that arriving safely is more important than arriving quickly. A moment of carelessness can result in the loss of a life or cause permanent injury to families and communities.
The Police will maintain a visible presence on the roads and will take appropriate action against motorists who violate traffic laws and endanger the lives of other road users.
Let us work together to make this public holiday safe and accident-free.
