More than 5000 runners from Zimbabwe and other countries took part in the 2026 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon held in Victoria Falls on Sunday.

The annual event once again brought together professional athletes and amateur runners for a day of sport, health and tourism.

Speaking during the event, organisers said the marathon has become an important platform for promoting Victoria Falls as a leading sports and tourism destination.

“Victoria Falls is a destination for sports and tourism. The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon has become an important platform for promoting our destination,” organisers said.

The marathon also boosted business in the city, with hotels, restaurants, transport operators and other local businesses benefiting from the large number of visitors who attended the event.

In the women’s half marathon, Mercy Chemutai claimed first place after completing the race in 1 hour, 15 minutes and 48 seconds, earning the top prize of US$1,500. The athlete who finished in tenth place received US$200. The same prize structure was used in the men’s half marathon.

Godwin Katakura won the men’s half marathon in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 29 seconds, taking home US$1,500.

Katakura encouraged more people to take up running. “Everyone has to run for health, running is good for one’s health,” he said. He also encouraged aspiring marathon runners to prepare well before entering competitions. “Those who want to participate in marathons should train hard,” he added.

In the men’s full 42-kilometre marathon, Tendai Zimuto crossed the finish line first in 2 hours and 16 minutes, securing victory in one of the day’s most competitive races.

The event also featured handcycle and wheelchair races, giving athletes with disabilities an opportunity to compete alongside other participants and celebrate the spirit of inclusion.
