Zimbabwe’s men’s 4x400m relay team produced a historic performance to qualify for the World Athletics Championships and the World Relays final after a record-breaking run at the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026 on Saturday.

The quartet of Gerren Muwishi, Leeford Zuze, Dennis Hove and Thandazani Ndhlovu finished third in heat two with a time of 2:59.01, smashing the national record in the process.

Their time was enough to secure qualification for next year’s World Athletics Championships in Beijing, while also booking a place in Sunday’s World Relays final.

Zimbabwe emerged as the surprise package of the race, leading at the halfway mark ahead of defending champions South Africa.

South Africa, powered by a strong third leg from teenage sensation Leendert Koekemoer, surged ahead to win the heat in 2:58.04.

Portugal produced a late charge to edge Zimbabwe on the line, with both teams clocking identical national record times of 2:59.01 to secure qualification.

The result underlines Zimbabwe’s rapid progress in sprinting, with the relay team now firmly among the continent’s top performers ahead of major global competitions.
