Hwange Local Board Urges Residents to Replace Squat Pan Toilets to Curb Sewer Blockages

The Hwange Local Board has issued a strong appeal to residents of the Empumalanga community, urging them to replace all squat pan toilets with sitting toilets. This initiative aims to reduce the frequent sewer blockages that are currently straining the council’s infrastructure.

The local authority has identified squat pan toilets as a significant contributor to blockages within the sewer network. These issues are exacerbated during water supply cuts when the sudden restoration of water overloads the system.

Town Secretary N. Mdlalose stated in a notice released on September 17, 2025, “The use of squat pan toilets is now prohibited, and continued use will attract penalties.” He emphasized the importance of prompt replacement and encouraged residents to report any sewer blockages to the council for immediate repair.

Residents facing sewer issues are advised to contact the Engineering Services Department during normal working hours or reach out via the council’s helpline at +263 71 233 6840 or +263 0281 30330.

The council highlighted that active cooperation from residents is essential for protecting infrastructure, enhancing sanitation, and fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for all. The Board expressed gratitude to the community for their ongoing support in maintaining a functional sewer system.

With frequent sewer overloads and pressing sanitation challenges, phasing out squat pan toilets aligns with broader efforts to improve urban infrastructure and public health standards in Hwange. This proactive measure is a critical step towards ensuring a sustainable and hygienic living environment for all residents.
