Hwange East MP Raises Alarm Over Water Pollution and Livestock Deaths Linked to South Mine Activities at Kalope Dam
Hwange East legislator Joseph Bonda has raised urgent concerns over the escalating water pollution and dam siltation caused by mining companies operating upstream of Kalope Dam in Change Ward 20.

During a recent parliamentary session, Hon. Bonda highlighted the devastating impact on both humans and livestock in the community relying on this critical water source. Kalope Dam, situated in the semi-arid Hwange East area and serving hundreds of households under the Lukosi Irrigation Scheme, is reportedly suffering from contamination due to mining activity. “ Livestock, including cattle and goats, are dying after consuming polluted water, while residents are developing related health issues”he said .

However Mutagech Logistics, the mining company operating in the area, has implemented a multi-layered environmental management plan. This plan includes surface runoff controls, water diversion trenches, sediment traps, periodic desilting of Kalope Dam, and groundwater contamination contingency measures, with ongoing monitoring to ensure compliance with regulations.

Meanwhile ,the crisis has galvanized community leaders and civil society to demand immediate government intervention to unblock tributaries feeding Kalope Dam, prevent illegal water diversion, and enforce pollution controls. “This situation threatens the sustainability of irrigation-based farming for over 280 families and impacts over 5,000 locals dependent on the dam for domestic use,”Bonda said.

As Hwange grapples with mining-related environmental challenges, calls grow louder for a balanced approach that protects both economic activities and the wellbeing of rural communities
