Story by  Hwange Chronicles Editor (s) 99 views

HWANGE, ZIMBABWE — Excitement and competitive spirit filled the air as host institution Coalfields Primary School narrowly clinched 1st position in a thrilling inter-school Swimming Gala, edging out tough regional competition from Victoria Falls schools.

Despite initial invitations extended to several institutions across the region—including Mother Touch Group of Schools, St Thomas, and Charleston Primary—the gala developed into an intense, high-stakes contest between three key regional powerhouses: Coalfields Primary School, Victoria Falls Primary School, and Victoria Falls Educational Centre.

The gala showcased outstanding sportsmanship, discipline, and aquatic skill as young swimmers dove into the water aiming for top points. Every event proved decisive, with the overall victory remaining up for grabs until the final races.

In a thrilling finish, host school Coalfields Primary School secured overall victory by a narrow margin on points over Victoria Falls Primary School.

Final Standings

1. 1st Place: Coalfields Primary School (Overall Champions)

2. 2nd Place: Victoria Falls Primary School

3. 3rd Place: Victoria Falls Educational Centre

A defining highlight of the event was the official presentation ceremony. Coalfields Primary School Captains proudly received the coveted Shield of Honor to celebrate their school’s hard-earned triumph.

The trophy was presented by the event’s Guest of Honor, the Headmaster of Victoria Falls Primary School, alongside Coalfields Primary School Sports Director, Prince Mhaka, highlighting the strong friendship and healthy competitive spirit shared between the participating schools.

The success of the gala underlines the growing strength of grassroots swimming programs across the Hwange and Victoria Falls districts. Schools in the area continue to serve as crucial developmental grounds for young aquatic athletes—many of whom, including swimmers from local setups like the Hwange Dolphins, go on to represent the region at prominent events such as the Bulawayo Econet Swimming Competition.

Described by organizers as a “brilliant success,” the gala not only celebrated athletic excellence but also re-established strong sportsmanship ties among participating schools, setting a high standard for upcoming inter-school fixtures in Matabeleland North.
