Remembering the Kamandama Disaster
A Legacy of Resilience
The Kamandama Disaster, which occurred on June 6, 1972, remains a significant event in the history of Zimbabwe, particularly for the Hwange community. This tragic incident, which took place at the Kamandama Colliery, resulted in the loss of over 400 miners due to a devastating underground explosion. The tragedy not only highlighted the dangers faced by miners but also sparked changes in safety regulations and mining practices across the country.
In honor of those who lost their lives, the Kamandama Memorial Marathon has been established as a way to commemorate their memory while promoting health and community spirit. Scheduled for 30 November 2025, this event invites participants of all ages and skill levels to join in various race categories, including:
- 5KM Fun Run
- 18KM Walk/Run
- 21.1KM Half Marathon
- 42.2KM Full Marathon
The marathon serves as a platform to raise awareness about the mining industry’s challenges and to celebrate the resilience of the community. It is also an opportunity for families and friends of the miners to come together, reflect on the past, and foster a sense of unity.
